Are you a locums doc that’s frustrated managing taxes on your own?

Do you wonder if you're missing out on making the most of available retirement accounts?

Does the idea of having a CPA who provides year-round, proactive tax advice and preparation sound appealing?

Being in locums offers a level of freedom that many traditionally employed docs will never experience. It's likely what attracted you to locums and has kept you there. But as with most things in life, with freedom comes responsibility. There is no HR department offering you a clean menu of health insurance, retirement and other benefit options. There is no payroll department that withholds income, social security, medicare, and state taxes each time you're paid. As a locums doc, you are the physician, business owner, benefits manager, and accountant.

Locums Tax is meant to be a resource for those looking for outside guidance. I offer proactive, professional and personable advice through a one-time Tax Review or an Annual Tax Package that features ongoing service throughout the year and preparation of your taxes at year-end. I am a CPA and CFP® and have direct experience working with the locums community, both in my former employment and through this firm.

You can go from frustrated and worried to focused and confident. You can avoid a large bill at tax time, lost chance of maximizing retirement savings and wasted hours filing your own taxes all while wondering if you're doing things right.

Take the first step and schedule a meeting. I'm low-pressure, and will do my best to offer you at least one piece of useful advice, regardless of whether you decide to work with me.

ABOUT ME

I spent the early part of my career in accounting software, and since 2013 have worked at different times in both public accounting and financial planning where my most recent employer had a growing virtual practice focused on serving physicians. Chasing an over decade long dream, I began Locums Tax PLLC in 2020. I am a CPA and CFP, and work to serve clients as I would want to be served (honest and professional, delivered with a smile).

On a more general note, I believe that time does fly, more money doesn't guarantee more fulfillment, and woodchip smokers make almost any food taste better. I’ve been married to Jessica since 2006, and together we tag-team the parenting of our feisty daughter, Charlotte. I like to camp, eat at Chic-fil-A on busy weeknights, hit the garage gym (to work off the Chic-fil-A waffle fries), listen to audiobooks, and hang around friends and family.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO FOCUS YOUR BUSINESS ON LOCUMS?

I believe there are many locum docs who are looking for tax help. Between work and family, life is busy enough without spending extra time dealing with taxes, too. Their goals include avoiding a big tax bill at year-end, making the most of business deductions, and maximizing their options for retirement savings. They want to work with someone who will provide proactive advice and that understands their business. My goal is to be that person.

I HAVE AN S-CORP. CAN YOU HANDLE THIS?

I can provide a recommendation on whether an S-Corp is needed. Typically, for those working locums, an S-Corp isn't the best choice. This can be especially true if you have or plan to have other W2 income for the year. If the S-Corp is the best option for you, then I'll provide direction from there.

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH INVESTING?

I can recommend retirement accounts (SEP-IRA, Solo 401k, Backdoor Roth, etc.) and funding amounts but I can't provide specific investment advice. I typically refer to Vanguard, who can help you open the accounts and provide more specific investment recommendations for your situation.

YOUR PRICES ARE HIGHER THAN MY LAST TAX GAL/GUY. HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY YOUR HIGHER FEES?

I am certainly not the cheapest, but that is by design. Typically, you only pay for someone to file your taxes. You likely provide them with your tax documents in the Spring and they call later primarily to tell you what is owed. There is nothing wrong with this setup but it can leave some proactive opportunities on the table. For example, did you set up your Solo 401k by December 31 of the prior year, set aside and pay appropriate estimated taxes based on that year's income, and track your income and expenses in an organized way? I price my services to provide proactive tax advice year-round that helps address these and other issues. Please see here for more details on this.

CAN WE WORK TOGETHER REMOTELY?

Yes! I operate out of my home office in Paducah, KY, and serve most clients virtually. Using tech like Zoom and Google, I work to be a more convenient and effective option than the traditional in-office meetings. If you've got online access, we can connect!
